International Departure Lounge

Client: Mace Construct
Location: Heathrow Airport Terminal 3
Sector: Aviation
Services: Raised Access Flooring & Conglomerate Terrazzo
Floor System: Nesite Raised Access Floor with pre-bonded Stana Margherita conglomerate terrazzo
Project Duration: 47 weeks across 22 carefully planned phases

Key Challenge: Maintaining full retail operation while replacing the floor in phased sections
Outcome: Complex refurbishment delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest quality standards
Access Floors Ltd was appointed by Mace Construct to undertake the complete replacement of the existing raised access flooring within Heathrow Terminal 3's International Departure Lounge. The original floor, which had been in service for over 30 years, had reached the end of its operational life following decades of modifications, with the supporting pedestal system no longer providing the structural integrity required for the busy terminal environment.
The project involved installing a new raised access flooring system with a substantial 1.1-metre service void beneath the floor, finished with premium pre-bonded Stana Margherita conglomerate terrazzo panels. The specialist system achieved exceptionally fine 2mm joints, creating a clean, contemporary finish while maintaining full accessibility to the extensive services beneath.
Working within one of the UK's busiest airport terminals presented significant logistical and operational challenges. Heathrow's requirements meant only one section of the departure lounge could be refurbished at any one time, with all works taking place behind half-height hoarding while retail concessions remained fully operational throughout the project.
To meet these requirements, the refurbishment was carefully delivered over 22 phases across 47 weeks, with the majority of work carried out during night shifts. Close collaboration with Mace Construct, Heathrow Airport and the wider project team ensured each phase was completed safely, efficiently and on programme, minimising disruption for passengers, retailers and airport operations.
The successful completion of this complex refurbishment highlights Access Floors Ltd's expertise in delivering technically demanding flooring projects within live operational environments, where meticulous planning, precise coordination and uncompromising quality are essential.

"Access Floors Ltd were employed as the major subcontractor on the Terminal 3 International Departure Lounge access floor replacement. Despite an extremely demanding programme delivered over more than twenty phases, AFL demonstrated exemplary project management, close collaboration and an unwavering commitment to safety and quality within a critical live environment. Quality without compromise."
